This past week we read/discussed main ideas about the Mount Pleasant Riots of 1991. On May 15/16, each student should finish (in class) composing an objective summary about this event. We will also use this article as we analyze whether or not this event was an effective means of protest. Students will write persuasive arguments using textual evidence to support their answers. We will continue completing EOG-style warm ups throughout the week. Reading logs are due now. Friday, May 19 is the last day that reading logs and any make up work will be accepted. Students are responsible for identifying what work is missing by using Power School and interim reports.
Week of May 8, 2017

Last week some students signed up for the online vocabulary program Membean and completed laptop rules orientation. Membean is being provided to our school this quarter on a trial basis, so we would like to enroll as many students as possible while we have access. Membean provides guided, engaging, multimodal vocabulary instruction and is an excellent tool to use at home for EOG preparation. Some students will be able to use Membean during school using our new in-class laptops as well as our existing table top computers. Membean sign-up instructions are located on my homepage.
In class this week, students will continue using news articles to identify central ideas, provide an objective summary, identify rhetoric, and use context clues to understand unknown words. We will have a quiz using some of these skills mid-week. Students should continue to read 20+ minutes each night at home AND update their online reading logs through Google Classroom. Reading logs are due May 12.
